I was going to check the Mass Vital records for any death entries. About when was he born and where? The family on the 1900 census did they use the surname Mello or Silva? It appears there is quite a large population of da Silvas and da Mellos from the Azores.
This is the information that I have from the passenger list. Joaquim da Silva and wife Maria da Conceicao arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii. on the SS Sulfolk on 25 Aug 1881 with three sons. Manuel (11) Jose (7) and Anotonio (3). The ship sailed from San Miguel. I don't know if they were from that Island or one of the other Islands in the Azores.
Joaquim was born abt. 1835. He was 39 years old when he came to HI. Somewhere along the line, Mello was added to the name. The 1900 Cencus list him as Joaquim Silva da Mello.
I checked the Mass Vitals for any possibles under the name da Silva or da Mello. There were no possible matches with Joaquim's age etc. There were numerous da Silvas and da Mellos in the area.
Thanks Eron, for trying to help. I have reached a dead end also. I will be going to the Azores and Madeira in another month. I am hoping to get more information there about him.
By the way, I was your neighbor in Glendale, AZ. Moved back to HI in 2004.
I would have to say that I am extremely jealous! I would take Vog over mundane desert anyday. If you do come up with possible family links let me know. Perhaps we could find the family he was visiting in the Mass vitals.
Eron: They probably went across country by train. I was thinking of checking in Chicago and San Francisco. Unfortunately, I don't have anyone to ask. My mother told me years ago that my grandmother had made a money belt for him to carry his money on that trip. She didn't have any details of their trip except that he traveled with his wife, Maria and daughter Teresa.
If I find out anymore, I will contact you. Thanks again, V

I can not reply to anyone who send me a message via MyHeritage. I have tried to reply to 3 people on two different computers (1 Vista 1 Win 7) and I always get
"An error occurred. Please try again later."
This happens when I try to click the reply link in the message.
Hi. I am new here and I have created a family tree (offline using the downloaded software). I have uploaded the tree which contains 102 people at the moment. However, I have no smartmatches. Is this normal? How do you get the smartmatch facility to work?
