I'm looking for any information on a Mary Loring who came from Folkstone, England to Australia in about 1840 and married James Lee from Ireland approx 1846. Not sure if either one were convicts. They lived in the Cowra area of New South Wales.
Your enquiry on the My Heritage message board has come to my attention via the Google Alerts system, and I am pleased to day I think I can help.
There was a MaryLoaringbaptised 8 Apr 1821 in Folkestone who did not appear with the rest of her family in the 1841 Census and whose death was not recorded either;she might well have emigrated to Oz c1840 and married there later, though I have no record of either event.
She was the daughterof John Loaring and Sarah Young, who married 13 Apr 1816 in Folkestone. He was born 1790 in Cullompton, Devonand died at Folkestone in 1862;Sarah was born c1795 in Folkestone and died there in 1870.
If you would like any further information about the family please feel free to e-mail me direct at:
I should be interested to know what gives rise to your interest in Mary.
Yours sincerely,
Maurice Loaring

I believe all Loarings and Lorings everywhere are related (except for stage names, pseudonyms, etc.).
My Awliscombe branch Loaring family tree (that includes me) is courtesy of Maurice Loaring of UK.
There is a John Loaring married to Sarah Young. He was born in Devenshire 23Oct1790,
died 22Jan1862, Dover Road, Folkestone, Kent.
Their 3rd child of 10 was Mary, born 1821, likely in Folkestone (siblings are shown born there).
Perhaps this is your Mary. I believe she may have used the Loring spelling.
Other Loarings and Lorings came to Australia at different times, all related,
though the connection can be ancient, the father of all being Albert of Lorraine, who lived before and after 1066.
Not everyone agrees that all Lorings and Loarings are related, but Maurice's DNA testing has confirmed connections for 7 of 10 responding branches. In my own mind, logic and historical records, together with the DNA evidence, command a single family explanation.
Thank you David, this information has given me something to follow through on. Its not easy when the ancestors change the spelling of their name. I have hit a brick wall with both mary and james but am determined to keep at it. Thank you once again, Alana
