The name Greer is a derivative of the name MacGregor. The family MacGregor dates back on record as early as the 14th century in Scottish history. Over the hills of and through the land can almost still be heard the cries of the clan as they sped on their horses, yielding their swords, in defense of their name and for anyone bearing the name of MacGregor.

   Glenorchy was the name of the land holdings of the clan and as they grew in numbers they were unfortunate enough to be forced to submit to other landlords as tenants. Even so, though years of struggle and effort they held onto Glenorchy for as long as was humanly possible.

   Their wild and fearless personalities were made know through out the land and they were loyal to each other to the end.

   The burial place for thr MacGregor clan was in Glenotchy at Dysart, Dalmally. A Gaclic poem called "MacGregor of Roro" is a lament for a MacGregor who perished after a battle.

                                      "Make winter as autumn,

                                         the wolf-day as summer;

                                    Thy bed be the bare rock,

                                       and light be thy slumber,"

   Each clan had its own tartan and the MacGregor tartan is a beautiful brilliant red  background with vertical and horizontal stripes of black and these two predominant colors are coordinated with a very thin stripe ( crossed ) of white, and blue. It is a very handsome design and color combination and somehowe speaks of their courage, their loyalty to each other, and the love of life which was typical of the Clan MacGregor.    Around the turn of the century - about 1700 - the records show that about 150 families lived around Inversnaid. This could be reached only by tracks or by water from Loch Lomond and via the river Leven.

   The present day chief of the clan is Lt. Col. Sir Gregor MacGregor of MacGregor, sixth Baronet who was born in 1925. His heir is his eilder son, Malcom Gregor Charles who was born in 1959.
