Photographs: My family states that all three photos are Marianna Schmiegel. The one of the elderly woman sitting alone came from my family (Margaret Poppenfus Surdick). The other two came from the family of John Poppenfus. No one has identified the woman in the middle of the three women photo. She looks like Cornelia's daughter, Waleria Kuffel, but is there evidence that a Kuffel came from Poland to visit?
D Erickson acrescentou um comentário sobre Marianna Popenfus aka Paperfus (born Schmiegel) :
There is just no proof, and putting this genealogy from the Marienwerder girl born in 1846 is just wrong right now. I will note, however, that Joannes and Catherina are very popular names in the Poppenfus and related families. But those names exist in Drzycim, too.

This is another candidate of a birth year matching perfectly with the marriage records and the only one that comes up on all of LDS:

Marianna Smigielski
Deutschland Geburten und Taufen
Name Marianna Smigielski
Gender Female
Christening Date 05 Aug 1846
Christening Place KATHOLISCHE KIRCHE,BRIESEN MARIENWERDER,WESTPREUSSEN,PRUSSIA
Father's Name Joannes Smigielski
Mother's Name Catharina Dadalska

This is, of course, pulling someone out of the universe, taking her away from her family, taking the "ski" off her name just to match the marriage records, which give ages MY Marianna never presented again in America. She always was younger than Matheus "Michael,"whenever the census takers came around. With those later children, her being born in 1848 makes it a little more comfortable than anything earlier. Plus, a Joannes Smigielski of Marienwerder, has another Marianna with another Catharina in 1849. Did this girl born in 1846 even make it?
D Erickson acrescentou um comentário sobre Marianna Popenfus aka Paperfus (born Schmiegel) :
What stops me from simply declaring Lorenz and Margaretha to be Marianna's parents? These things must be considered:

1. A Marianna died in Drzycim at age 2 in 1850. The index gives no parents. I bet the record does not either. Nevertheless if something hidden in that record shows that Margaretha's daughter and Lorenz's did not survive, everything I have here is wrong.

2. Other candidates are out there. The first is Marianna Agnes, born 1848, to Adalbert Smigiel and Joanna Suminski. She could have died in 1848. I can find no record of her in later years, no marriage unless she is MY Marianna, but MY Marianna has never used "Agnes" on any record. "Agnes" seems to have been used to distinguish one from the other. But then why does not the death record use "Marianna Agnes" if this is the girl who died? This was a Drzycim family from around 1848 to 1852 and resulted in the following children: Andreas, b1849; Catherina, b1851; Johann, b1852. There may be a half-sibling--Angelica, born 1890 in Sliwice, to Adalbert and Rosa Gibas. I can find no trace of the family other than these records. This candidates birth date also does not match the Polish marriage records, but she and the first Marianna are the ONLY two in Drzycim and the surrounding area that are even close to the right age.

Go to my home page. The photo is there. It uses a computer program to compare the two women.
D Erickson comentou sobre a foto Schmiegelphoto:
Are these two women the same person? This is Waleria Kuffel on the right and an unknown visitor to the home of Marianna Schmiegel on the left. The resemblance is very close.

D Erickson acrescentou um comentário sobre Waleria Kuffel :
As the search for the origins of Marianna Schmiegel Poppenfus continues, websites from Cornelia Kuffel's family show a photo of her daughter that is startlingly familiar. On the right is the mystery lady sitting between Marianna and Mary Ann Poppenfus. On the left is Waleria Kuffel. See the uploaded photo.

Note: This link needs to be proved. Evidence points to my great-great grandmother Marianna Schmiegel as being the half-sister of Cornelia. But since my great-great grandmother has never had on any record a consistent birthdate, proving this may need a DNA test.
